I picked up this silent butler (also known as a crumber, or crumb sweeper) at an estate sale recently. They were used to sweep the crumbs and ashes from the table, particularly at formal dinner parties.
The ornate detailing caught my eye, however it was very dark at the sale, and this crumber was very tarnished and dirty.
I brought it home, cleaned it up, and upon closer inspection, I realized that the design was actually peacocks within the art nouveau style!
This is the handle of the brush.
