These are a few more of my recent finds. Above is a Victorian Spooner - combination sugar bowl and spoon rack. It has a great bird finial handle (available here).

Fabulous Reed & Barton teaspoons, with an N monogram (available here).

Another trophy to add to my collection. This one is a bud vase.

For a Post Office Marathon in 1935. First Prize.

Some really unusual US Navy demitasse spoons. They have little tiny anchors engraved on the front, and USN engraved on the back.

And a creamer sugar set - monogrammed with A M.
Some good estate sales coming up this weekend!! Fingers crossed I will find more good stuff!

Finds, Fairy Tale Book

A few of my recent finds...

Set of Rogers forks and knives, it the original box! Great graphics on the box.

A couple of unusual serving pieces - a tomato server, and a butter knife.

This is engraved on the butter knife. I haven't figured out what it means yet.

Brass Pelican key holder.

And a fairy tale pop-up book from 1933.

The outside of the book is in terrible condition, but the inside is amazing!.

The colors are great, the pop-ups very detailed. Above is Hansel and Gretel.

Victorian Silver

These are some of my favorite Victorian silver pieces. Above is a Chocolate Pot.

It has the word Chocolate engraved across the front. It is similar to a teapot.

This is one of the most unusual pieces I have seen. It is a Victorian Sugar Cube Caddy.

The handle is actually sugar tongs.

The sugar tongs lift out when squeezed together.

An old hand mirror.

Engraved Caroline.

With dancing ladies on the border.

And a crumber with a devil-ish face design.

Crumbers were used to sweep crumbs or ashes off of tables, into the larger pan.

Thanksgiving Silver

Thanksgiving is already tomorrow! I have decided to get out some of my favorite Antique Serving Pieces to use.
The Victorians had a serving piece for every type of food - so I try to use unusual pieces - not necessarily for their originally intended uses.

This is a Victorian carving set.

They have an ornate design with Gothic Faces on the handles.

A tiny condiment ladle, gravy ladle, sugar spoon and pastry server.

A vegetable serving fork, tomato/cranberry round server, and a nut cracker.

A bonbon server, large waffle server and cocktail fork.

Variety of tongs - pickle tongs, pastry tongs and sugar tongs.

The pickle tongs have hands for grabbers.

A toast rack and butter knife.

And my favorite monogrammed flatware.

More Estate Finds

Lately I haven't had great luck at estate sales, but I finally found a few things - including some of my favorite things.

A pretty sugar scuttle. Great for holiday candies or nuts. I love finding sugar scuttles.

An English Toast Rack. Another favorite thing.

Group of spoons.

Including a demitasse hotel spoon from Hotel Pere Marquette, and a Bonbon spoon.

A cigar box.

And a group of old candles.

Estate Sales

I love going to estate sales, and last weekend I went to one at the above mansion. It belonged to the granddaughter of James J. Hill (built a railroad empire in the 1800's). It was not a house you would expect to find in Minnesota - it reminded me of something straight out of The Great Gatsby.

These pictures are from a cell phone, so they don't really represent how amazing this house was. Complete with servants quarters, multiple porches, and sitting on a lake, it was really cool to see. Unfortunately, by the time I got there, the merchandise was picked over (not to mention expensive), so I did not buy anything. They had tables and tables of monogrammed linens, maids outfits from the 1930's, lots of sterling silver - the kind of things you would expect to find in a mansion.

At another estate sale, I found this cat and mouse weathervane.

It sits in the garden along with the witch weathervane - I already had this one.

A few antique books with great covers.

And an old Halloween box.

A set of pretty coin silver spoons, they have a sunflower pattern.

And a monogrammed butter knife.

Halloween Finds

Halloween is approaching fast! I found a few Halloween related items at some estate sales. Above is a 1960's blow mold of a witch. It has a light inside, and she glows when lit up.

A few more Halloween items....

An old Gurley candle with it's original label still on.

A witch mug.

This one is not from an estate sale, but it is pretty cool. A witch made out of salvaged metal parts.

And her little cat rides on the back of the bike.

And for the non-Halloween items, a couple of salt spoons.

Some Finds From Last Weekend

These are a few of the things that came home with me last weekend.

An unusual toast rack.

A very old brass bell with interesting engravings.

It is a little hard to see, but there is a figural women/angel above the bell, and a dog figure on the left side.
Lots of great details on this one.

Tiny pierced bowl, with faces on each of the points.

This is my favorite find - a Reed & Barton toothpick holder with a satyr face.

Some great silver spoons.

One is engraved with a J, and the other with '13.

Junk Bonanza and Weekend Finds

These are a few of the things I bought at the Junk Bonanza, and also a few estate sales this past weekend.
I found another fruit crate - love those.

A cute little drawer, the lock and key still work! A few French books.
There were tons of drawers at the Junk Bonanza. I love how they look grouped together.

My favorite thing to look for is unusual Victorian silverplate serving pieces, and I was surprised to find some at the Junk Bonanza.

Including a set of small cream spoons and a set of ice cream spoons.

Both have very ornate floral patterns. The ice cream spoons are monogrammed.

I also found some larger serving pieces.

Also with very ornate patterns.

An asparagus serving fork, and a cake serving fork.

A large ladle and a pair of unusual salad serving pieces. The bowls have an embossed pattern.

The large ladle has a monogram on the front side, and the back is engraved: 1880 Oct. 25 1905.
I wonder what those dates mean???

The Junk Bonanza

The Junk Bonanza was this weekend. It was fabulous. So many great things to see.

Lots of cool signs,

pillows and linens,

silver items,

great coffee table carts.

I loved this Nutting cart. I really wanted to take it home, but it wasn't meant to be.

Tons of boxes.

Interesting industrial pieces.

Creative uses of bed springs.

Pretty displays everywhere.

So many things already had 'sold' tags on them.

I loved these boxes.

Overall, a very successful show. It was so crowded, I think they probably sold a ton of stuff! Looking forward to next year....

Junk Bonanza and Recent Finds

The Junk Bonanza is coming up next week - I am very excited. I was super lucky and won tickets, a bag, a hat and a copy of Flea Market Magazine from The Red Shed. It arrived in the mail today!

I added a French Label image from the Graphics Fairy.

A copy of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. And a little brass hook that coincidentally looks like a little bit like an Oompa Loompa.

Boxes

I've picked up a bunch of boxes recently to use for storage. The above three are all apple crates.

One did not have a graphic, so I used an image from the Graphics Fairy to add some interest.

The other had bright apple graphics.

They are in really good shape.

They will be used in the garage to make everything look a bit neater.

I also found this German Sweet Chocolate box at an estate sale.

Walter Baker was the oldest chocolate company in the US, founded in 1780.

Weekend Thrift Finds

I went to a bunch of estate sales this weekend, found a few things.

A big drawer - for storage. It has a really pretty handle.

A couple of very old books.

Including this Victorian era Mother Goose book. A great book to sit out for Halloween decor.

A tiny Victorian photo album.
It has a repoussé design, the front reads Souvenir.

The back is an art nouveau style floral design.

The inside has pictures of Paris, from around the turn of the century.

It even has a date written on one of the pages, but unfortunately not the year.

And an old box with an iron handle. Another great storage piece. Someone has to try it out to see if it would work as a cat bed.

Citra Solv Transfer Method - French Cat Chair

The Citra Solv transfer method has become my favorite way to create my own design on fabric. You can see the pillows that I made using this method HERE.
My sister wanted to recover 4 dining chairs, and requested a design that incorporated "French" and "Cats".

The above picture shows my supplies - bottle of Citra Solv Concentrate (I ordered mine online, I couldn't find it locally), small paint brush, old spoon and ruler. I also made sure to use put something on the counter to absorb any extra - I used a paper grocery bag.

For my design, I found clipart cats online, and used MS Word for the text. The text has to be a mirror image, so that when it is transferred, it will come out properly. Computers and programs differ, but the program I used was Mac Preview (Tools - Flip Horizontal).
The hardest part of the project might be finding a toner based printer/copy machine that will work with the Citra Solv. I had to try a couple before I found one that worked (my local Kinkos copiers did not work). I found an old copy machine in a grocery store that worked perfectly.

First step is to tape the design to the fabric, so it doesn't slide around. I did mine in layers, starting with the cats.

A small paintbrush works well - dip it into the Citra Solv and lightly paint over the design. The design will show through as soon as the liquid touches it.
The spoon is used to burnish the image - I used the back of the spoon to rub over the design. It needs to be pressed fairly hard - but not hard enough that the paper rips.

A large design with lots of solid area can come out kind of splotchy. I don't mind, I was hoping for a Vintage-y look.

I used a ruler to line up the words. Taped on and then burnished.

I also added numbers to the bottom. Same process as above.

And this is the finished product (it is still a little wet). Once the Citra Solv has dried completely, I ironed it to set the image.

An old Victorian monogrammed clothes brush and a waffle server.

A brass and marble souvenir of Paris, and a letter opener from the 50's.

It has a a lady on one side,

And a man on the other. The both are very Mad Men-ish.

Jewelry Chest Makeover

For some time, I had been looking for a jewelry chest -cheap - that could hold my silver collections.

I finally found this one a few weeks ago at an estate sale.

I painted it gray - Almost Charcoal, by Valspar.

Then distressed it with sandpaper.

And finished it with dark wax.

Now I have the perfect place for my silver cocktail pieces, strawberry and lemon forks, fruit spoons and bonbon scoops.

The drawer with the smallest spots holds salt spoons and napkin rings.

I have a lot of napkin rings.

I'm not really sure what type of jewelry goes in this drawer, but it works for long cocktail forks and fish knives.

And the last large drawer works for larger serving pieces.

Vintage Finds

I made it to a couple of estate sales and antique shops this weekend. I found some good stuff!

This is an old Victorian shoe box. Much nicer than the shoe boxes of today. It is very sturdy and has brass details, great for storage.

A cute little enamel pitcher.

And a handful of silver.

The pitcher will be used outside to water the plants on the back porch.

The silver includes forks, spoons, a bon bon spoon and sugar tongs.

This group is all Scandinavian.

All very ornate, art nouveau details.

Trophy Collection

I have been trying to expand my vintage trophy collection for some time now. They are very hard to find, at a reasonable price. I have even bid (and lost) on a few on Ebay.
But just this past weekend, I came across 2! at different estate sales.

The first is a 1948 trophy is from a Persian Cat competition, called the Billie Bancroft Trophy.

And a tennis trophy from 1919.

This trophy started my collection, a while back. It's a 1922 Tennis trophy.

A few more things I found this past weekend... A trio of baby cups.

Two of them are aluminum - and this one has little scenes of Mary Had a Little Lamb and other nursery rhymes. So cute.

This is my thrifting haul from the weekend.
I found some feed sacks with cool graphics.

I love the archery guy.

This one has "Supersweet" all over it. Both sacks have printing on 2-sides.

A group of little things.

Including a 1933 version of Three Little Pigs.

Cute little cup engraved with the name Mamie.

It has a horse scene along the bottom.

A little silver dog knife rest.

And a Victorian Sugar Cube Holder - also perfect size for holding business cards.

Vintage Finds

These are a few things I've found recently at estate sales and antique stores.
I love using wine boxes as planters (lettuce growing in the above picture).

This box came from an estate sale, it has great graphics.

And lots of French writing.

Some other great finds...

A couple of unique serving pieces with pretty pierced designs.

A little German pewter cup. A prince and princess on one side.

With the inscription: Reiner Wein und Wahre Liebe Machen Fröhliche Gefühle,
which means, according to Google Translate, Pure and True Love of Wine Making Happy Feelings.

One of my favorite finds, a brass bath sign.

And a couple of brass cats.

French Inspired Pillows

I have finally tried the Citra-Solv Transfer method, making two French themed pillows.

I found extremely helpful tutorials and tips at The Graphics Fairy and 2 Vintage Sisters.
Citra-Solv was hard to find in my area, I ended up ordering it online.
It also took a few tries to find a toner based printer that worked - my local Kinkos printers did not work. I found an old copy machine at a local grocery store - it worked perfectly.

I used some vintage fabric pieces that I had in my fabric stash.

Both images are from The Graphics Fairy.

The pillow forms were old pillows I had around the house.

This image transferred a bit blurry on one side - but I don't mind. I think it adds to the vintage look (hopefully).

I was very happy with this method and will definitely be trying other projects.

A set of Pinochle card from the 1930's. It has a linen cover, and great graphics.

A bridge score keeping pad.

It sits inside a brass clip board.

Brass golf club bottle opener.


And a lovely little silverplate strawberry fork.

Barstool Redo

This was my first attempt at distressing furniture. I read up on techniques on Miss Mustard Seed's blog in preparation - it was very helpful.

I started off with these 1980's style barstools.

First step was to stand them and then paint them a creamy white. I used a sample I received from Valspar - Blizzard Fog.

Next step was to paint the design, using a stencil. Once it dried, I used a dry brush to paint a bit of white over the design to make it look a bit more worn.

I then sanded it again, hitting the spots that would get the most wear - the edges, the bars along the bottom.

Then I used Dark Walnut Stain, brushed it on then wiped it off with an old rag.

Last step was to seal with a couple of coats of Minwax Polycrylic (water based).

Jewelry Chest Find

I have been looking for a jewelry chest for a while now, and I finally found one at an estate sale for a decent price. I was hoping to find one that was a bit older and a bit bigger, but this one will do. I think I will paint it.
I plan to keep my silver collections in here.

This little art nouveau style dish is a souvenir of the Little Mermaid Statue in the bay of Copenhagen.

A few old books.

And some interesting silver pieces.

Two of them are monogrammed, including the tiny salt spoon.

Now that our weather has finally taking a turn for the better, I'm hoping to finally find some good garage sales this week!

Thrift Finds - Lots of Brass

Estate Sales have not been good lately, but here are a few things I managed to find.

Some little brass figures - the mouse can be used as a receipt spike.

A brass house number 5, and an alligator nut cracker. You lift his tail to open the mouth.

Cat letter holder.

And a little souvenir silver plate.

It has different scenes, I think depicting the Crusades?

And has this cute little engraving on the back.

Silver Sunday Easter Edition

I gathered up all of my Easter related silver for Silver Sunday.

A couple of different rabbit napkin rings.

This one has the bunny etched into it.

A silverplate egg cup tray.

The tray has little pegs, and the cups have holes, so they don't slide around. Very clever.

Bunny spoons.

A little chick hatching out of it's egg. The details are great - you can see it's little foot poking out of the cracked shell.
And the bowl of the spoon reads EASTER.

There were a few estate sales in my area this past weekend. Our weather is finally getting nicer, so I'm hoping that garage sales will be starting.
I always like finding political items, and I found a few this weekend, as well as a few other things...

A business card holder with a brass plaque - United States Congress.

A perpetual brass calendar - souvenir of D.C.

A couple of books - Boys & Girls of the White House, 1909. Long before the Kennedy's but the cover could be John Jr. and Caroline playing on the front lawn.

A set of school flashcards. They have great graphics.
And an old toast rack, which makes the perfect holder for the flashcards.

Books, Books and More Books

Even though I've decided I do not need any more books, I ended up at a book sale, dragging a box of books home with me.

I really love old books, and just couldn't leave some of these behind.

Also found a great baby cup with a pretty flower design,
and a couple of spoons.

Most of the books were from the late 1800's early 1900's. I love the covers on these - the Fortune Telling book is form 1890. It's in terrible shape, unfortunately.

A couple of kids books from the 20's.

Golden Gems of Penmanship Self Instruction, 1884. This one has great pictures and writing examples.

Victorian Lady Figural Spoons

One of my favorite personal collections is my lady figural spoons, particularly Victorian era.

A 1906 graduation spoon. The '06 date is engraved on her diploma.

Initials are engraved in the bowl of the spoon.

A little mustard scoop spoon with a medallion figure.

A really detailed spoon.

The back is simply marked Fairy.

A chocolate spoon - from Sorority Chocolate Series, early 1900's.

I found a magazine ad for the chocolates - it is dated 1907 - 1912 (found here).

The back of the spoon reads: Sorority Chocolates Series.

And a sugar spoon, in the Siren pattern by 1847 Rogers Bros. One of my favorite patterns, but very hard to find.

Antique Show Finds

This past weekend I went to an Antique Show - the kind they hold in the malls.
I wasn't expecting much, but I ended up finding some good stuff.

Some jewelry and a tiny sterling ring dish.

A few forks, including Humpty Dumpty.

Great brass sign on a chain, open and closed. Maybe from an old store.

And a pretty little Reed & Barton bonbon bowl, with a very ornate rim.

Junkin' Friday Finds

Here are a few things I've found in last week or so.

A story book from 1929. I love the bright green color, and how all of the characters have a very 20's look and style.

Little hotel spoon.

Great little pitcher that has an L monogram on one side, and a B on the other.

Ceramic holy water font.

And a beautiful brass box with a very ornate design. Engraved with an "F" and 1877 - 1927.

Junkin' Finds Friday

February has not been a great month for thrifting. Very few estate sales, and the thrift stores have been packed with people and really picked over. But I've still managed to find a few things.

This is a brass paper stand. I'm not sure exactly what it would have been used for - it is very lightweight. Something like sheet music would work well. I love the newsboy cutout design.

Some monogrammed forks.

A cigar box, large brass key and an absinthe spoon.

And a lovely Wizard of Oz book.

The book is quite large, and the graphics and colors are amazing.

Silver Sunday

These are a few more pieces from my silver collection.

This is a little bowl engraved with Winnie the Pooh and friends.

The whole gang is represented.

And some little quotes from Pooh.

It is made by Community, and I think it from around the 30's. I found it at an estate sale.

Even Christopher Robin is here.

This is a spoon I found on Ebay.

It shows Hansel and Gretel, plus the witch and the Gingerbread House.

A tiny little cup I found at an estate sale.

I have been unable to decipher the engraving.

I think the first word is Souvenir, and the last initials are E.W., but that's all I have. I think it is German, and I assume it was a souvenir.

Vintage Valentine Inspiration

With Valentine's Day coming up, I dug through my vintage postcard collection and pulled out a few Valentine's.

This one is my favorite - from 1911. It has a red puffy heart, and glitter written: From Clara.
Did they have glitter in 1911?

Another old one, with a Valentine poem.

Very basic postcard.

And a funny one.

I used this great mail holder/toast rack with a pink plastic base to hold them.

I happened to stop by Michael's, and they were giving away Christmas Grab Bags with any purchase...for free! The bags were sealed up, so you couldn't see inside them. Here is what was in mine...

Dough Bowl

The Nester is featuring decoration with dough bowls - and since I have a dough bowl, here is how I use it...

Most of the time it holds various types of twine. It is sitting atop an old brandy crate.

Occasionally my cats try to chew on the ends - I guess because it holds twine, they assume it is a giant cat toy.

Here it is during the holiday season, when it holds old glass ornaments.

White Bed Frame

I haven't done any Before and After furniture projects lately. Unfortunately I only have the "after" on this one.
This bed frame was a street find.
An ugly street find. Even though the frame is wood, it looked like plastic, with a faded yellow speckled paint job. And the fabric was an even uglier 1980's mauve satin. I really with I had a before photo.
The frame received a flat white paint job.
I found this silvery/gray velvet upholstery fabric as a remnant, for only $1. There was barely enough to work with, but I was able to make it fit.
After replacing the foam, I stapled the new fabric to the frame, then used white fabric trim to cover up the staples. And there you have it, a new bed frame.

It is cold and snowy here, but I've still managed to get out to a few thrift stores and estate sales. This Wizard of Oz little girls dress is one of my favorite finds.

I think it from the 60's, the fabric and the style is so cute.

Lots of twine. I pick it up when I can find it cheap, this was $0.50 for the lot. Also a pair of Christmas ornaments, I think they are supposed to be Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, also only $0.50.

Silver Sunday

Silver Sunday again! I am a little behind on showing my finds, so here are some silver related recent finds.

Silverplate wire heart shaped bowl. I am using it to hold some vintage lace and ribbon.

Cute little French covered dish.

Closeup of the engraving on the lid. It is a bit hard to read, but I think it says:
Le Manoir aux Alouettes
DEPUIS 1892

A handful of silver serving pieces.

Including a fish server knife and fork set, and a German child's spoon.

The child spoon is a mid-century modern version of Jack and Jill.
The fish servers are monogrammed LE.

Closeup of the pretty engraving on the fish set. I found these on a great Etsy Store.

And what might be my favorite find, a pair of Sacramental Service plates, probably used by priests for visiting the sick. They are each monogrammed with IHS (Christogram for the Greek spelling of Jesus).

The backs are marked Sick Call Outfit Special Pat'd April '97 (that would be 1897!)
This was probably part of a set that a priest would carry with him. I love finding interesting religious items like this, but rarely come across them.

Best of 2010 Finds

During 2010 I went to many estate sales, garage sales, thrift shops, antique shops, and flea markets. I found a lot of great things, here is a brief recap of some of my favorite finds of 2010.

Silver, silver and more silver. My number one thing to look for.

I found lots of great flatware, bowls, serving pieces.

Some of it I kept, some ended up on my Etsy Shop, some were given as gifts.

I love to look for old books.
And I do judge them by their covers, I always look for great graphics, both on the cover and inside.
I found many children's books, home decor books and some of the classics.

Unusual outdoor/garden items are another thing I keep my eyes open for. Like this wood cutout girl, and a wagon to hold flowers.

An old rusted bird bell and an elephant bird house are a few of the things that decorated the garden this year.

Old group photos. After seeing a story in Country Living I wanted to display the ones I already had, and add a few more.

Both of these are Victorian era school photos. Both found at estate sales.

Some old cabinet photos, too.

And I added to my collection of old candy tins, I particularly like the art nouveau style tins.

Looking forward to the amazing finds that 2011 will bring!

Christmas Presents

It was a lovely Christmas here at The Lazy Peacock.
These are just a few of the wonderful gifts that I received.
A beautiful set of antique French tortoise hair combs.
They are each stamped France. I love them, and since I wear my hair up all the time, they will get a lot of use.

Several antique/collecting books.

Including this one about Paris shops.

Some new silver polish! I go through silver polish like crazy. I haven't tried this one before, but am always looking for a better one - I have yet to come across one that I really love.

This super adorable handbag was from my brother and his wife. They have the cutest shop in Princeton NJ, Green Design. I think it probably came from their shop.

It has a little birdie stitched onto it. So cute!

This was a gift I gave to my mom - who loves Halloween and Christmas. It is a print of a Christmas Witch - her sleigh is made of broomsticks, being pulled by black cats, one white cat at the helm. I found this shop on ebay, Byrum Art - they have lots of great Halloween and Christmas prints.

I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas too!

White Christmas Mantel

This year the fireplace mantel went all white and silver.

Lots of Christmas tree candles, and a cardboard church with bottle brush trees.

This Santa sleigh was an estate sale find - it used to be gold. A quick coat of white spray paint fixed it right up.

This one is my favorite - another Saturday Evening Post, December 27, 1947. I suspect this is what many people feel like after the holidays.

Christmas Surprise

I love when surprises arrive in the mail around Christmas time. This beautiful basket came from my pal octoberfarm, who is famous for her amazing baskets filled with goodies.

It was packed full with wonderful cheeses, really nice teak cutting board.

The best blueberry spread I have ever tried, honey mustard, artichoke spread.

A really good olive oil, balsamic glaze, white truffle honey (can't wait to try this).

Figs, salami, prosciutto .

Amaretti cookies, a topping for brie, more great cheese.

Some lovely cheese knives and spreaders, cheese markers,

Italian pasta,

Almond nougat candy in the best packaging.

These are all the individual wrapped candies.

Best basket - ever!

And the basket happened to arrive at the best possible time...right before a huge snowstorm.
The cheese on the right, with the Christmas tree design was my very favorite - but I can't remember what it was called!

We had 17" of snow and were snowed in all weekend.
This is the blueberry spread over some brie cheese. Yum!

A Few Recent Finds

These are a few of my recent finds.
A great black and white plate. It's a George Jones & Sons England plate from the 1920's.

Three silver serving forks.

I love the lines on these. I think they are all considered Cold Meat Serving Forks, but of course they work for everything!

Thanksgiving Decor

Tomorrow's the big day. Here is a quick peak at the Thanksgiving decorations.
Above are a couple of wood pilgrims.

A "fall" themed mantel.

Some vintage acorn candles, and pillar leaf candles (both Gurley).

Turkey and pilgrim candles (Gurley, again).

A few more candles, and some old pewter heads.

They are salt and pepper shakers.

The outdoor decor is pretty much decimated.

This guy has eaten the backs out of all of the pumpkins, and today we are having a snow storm, so everything left is covered in snow!

Silver Sunday

These are some of my silver finds over the last few weeks.

Curved handle pastry server. I'm not sure of the proper name for these, but I like to use them for small desserts. I thought I used them on my last dessert buffet, but I couldn't find a picture. I pick these up whenever I see them, which isn't often. This one is made in England.

Double handle sugar bowl, with a great design. This piece was made in the late 1800's and is in amazing shape. I thought when I bought it the design was cherries, but now I think it it apples.

A handful of flatware, some of it monogrammed, my favorite.

Pair of large ice or sugar cube grabber tongs. Probably good for pickles too.

And a Christmas tree toast rack.

It will be perfect to put Christmas cards, or even better, vintage Christmas postcards like above. Of course also great to serve Christmas morning toast.

These are a few of my finds from the weekend.

A couple of old books, and an old group photo. Everyone is dressed up and outside a church - maybe it was a wedding?

Mother Goose Rhyme book - this one has some amazing illustrations.

A monogrammed celluloid jewelry box.

Great art deco pin - the bottom arrow screws on and off.

An old marriage certificate. I thought the design was so pretty.

It is from 1901 in Stillwater, Minnesota - a really cute little town with lots of great antique shops.

A Few New Finds

This is another group photo I recently found - one of my favorite things to look for.

It is from the Johnson School of Music Oratory and Dramatic Arts, Class of 1903.

The frame is beautiful, though it is a bit chippy. A few pieces are missing, but since it is over 100 years old, I think it has held up pretty well.

I turned away for only a second when someone else decided to check it out.

I also found this ornate tin box. It is stamped Made in West Germany.

Some silverplate flatware. Lots of polishing to do.

And this little plate. It reads: Circular Dining Room.

The light yellow and aqua colors are very pretty.

Happy Halloween! I thought I'd show a few more vintage Halloween decorations before they are all packed away for the year.
This is a witch decanter.
Michter's Whiskey - her head screws off.

A couple of kitchen witches.

One is a handle holder, her sleeves and eyes light up, the other a spoon holder.

This old witch is a bird house.

A scary witch from Dijon, France.

Witch hat and broom candle snuffer and pewter witch statue.

This is an old clay pipe, from about the mid 1800's. It has Salem Mass on one side.
And a witch on the other.

I have lots and lots of vintage Halloween items. Most have been found at estate sales and antique shops. A few things found at thrift stores.
Above is an old witch weathervane.

I found this witch trophy at a thrift store, it was probably a best costume award.

Etsy Treasury

Anyone familiar with Etsy is probably familiar with the Treasury Section. Buyers and sellers can put all of their favorite items together in a "treasury". I love to browse through them. Some people are very clever with the themes.
I particularly like this one, called A Haunting, put together by missbirdies shop (and it features a Ouija Board from my shop).

Vintage Jewelry

I don't know much about vintage jewelry. I rarely buy it, but love to look at it when at estate sales. These are a few pieces that have caught my eye - I picked them all up at different estate sales.

Enamel and rhinestone brooch - love the pretty colors on this.

This pin is marked Sterling on the back. The art deco style caught my eye. It is made up of little silver beads (?) that kind of look like stones in certain light. Does anyone know what this is called?

Long brooch with faux pearls.

This is my favorite piece.

The cat face slides open to reveal a watch! Love the green rhinestone eyes.

I used a mini pumpkin as my model since I couldn't keep the watch open and snap the photo at the same time.

This is some more of my vintage Halloween decor.

A blow mold witch lantern. Her pumpkin lights up when she is plugged in.

Another blow mold lantern - though this one is missing the lighting innards.

I found this great planter at a recent occasional sale.

It has a heavy iron base, a child figure on each side.

And it came with the bright orange pot. It seemed made for a pumpkin to sit in.

Halloween Silver

Victorian era silver is my very favorite thing to collect. I especially like anything Gothic or with faces. This is my collection of "Halloween" silver.
A carving set, a large ladle and a pie server.

They are all by Reed & Barton, and they all have a devil-ish face within the ornate design.

Tiny saccharin or pill box. The little figure looks like a cherub from some angles, and like a little devil from others.

A variety of spoons, some from Salem, Mass.

Pair of spooners with a 17th century village scene. A snake oil salesman is selling a treatment to the villagers, and those who try it become ill and are wheeled off in carts.

Gothic style sugar bowl.

Each of the feet have a scary face.

A silver devil shot glass.

The face is on each side and is winking.

Dessert Buffet

I set up a mini dessert buffet for a dinner party a few weeks ago.

I used some of my favorite serving pieces.

Store bought macaroons served with my favorite pastry tongs.

Vanilla pudding in chocolate cups on a tarnished silver platter.

I used a sugar free pudding mix and dark chocolate cups - for the diabetic crowd. Raspberry and mint for the garnish. They are each served on butter pats.

Two cake plates stacked for the mini cupcakes.

Chocolate with cream cheese frosting. Another pair of pastry tongs.

And a bronze lady figure holds some candies.

Fall Outdoor Decor

The hay bale and pumpkins have been bought and put into place on the back porch.

Including my $0.50 thrift store pumpkins - the above light green on the right.

And the two in the middle, dark green and pink.

Lots of little green pumpkins.

These are from the accidental pumpkin patch.

I think that we picked 22 of them - and there are still some out there!

Halloween Weekend Finds

Do I need anymore Halloween items? Absolutely not.
Did I come home with a bunch of Halloween items this weekend? Yes.
It's really hard to pass up some of the cool old vintage stuff. I hit a couple of estate sales, thrift store, and a flea market this weekend. This is what I found.
A couple of ghost candles.

Mr. Pumpkin head candle.

A witch candle and little figure.

Great Halloween wood cat pull toy with pumpkin wheels.

A cauldron with a witch handle - makes a perfect Halloween spoon holder.

They were even selling pumpkins/gourds at the thrift store I stopped at! I got this light green one.

A darker green, and light pink. They were only $0.50 each!

And lastly, this big witch with a cauldron.

There is a devil face within the cauldron.

Old Black and White Group Photos

When I saw this bathroom (above) in Country Living Magazine, I knew I wanted to group together some of my old black and white photos.

This is my version.

It is mostly old school related photos.

And a group of unknown woman.

Most of these are old family photos, but a few are from thrift stores or estate sales.

I have found some of these plain black frames at thrift stores for a couple of dollars to frame the loose ones.

Weekend Finds

I found this great industrial style typing table for $4. I saw many similar style pieces at the Junk Bonanza, but for much more money.

These are a few other things that came home with me.

A couple of books - another Silver Collecting book and Looking in Junk Shops - from the 60's.

A really interesting little pitcher. It has an O monogram on the lid.

Tiny little dish with Hazel on it- maybe a salt dish?

A bronze broad jump trophy from 1949. Trophies are another thing I saw in abundance at the Junk Bonanza.

And a monogrammed napkin ring - I think it says La Dere?

Spool Cabinet

I have wanted an antique spool cabinet for a while - but they have usually been out of my budget.

I came across these two cabinets at a flea market - they are handmade cabinets - same size and shape as the sewing cabinets I have seen.

I didn't particularly like the finish or the handles on this one (but I do like the cat on top who decided she might want this one for herself).

I lightly sanded the cabinet and applied a black stain over the current finish, to make it look older, more antiqued.

I found some spool cabinet drawer decals online, and stuck those on. Found some knobs at Home Depot, drilled new holes and put those on.

And that is my "antique" spool cabinet. I'm working on the second one too, and will eventually stack one on top of the other.

Vintage Halloween

These are a few vintage Halloween items that will be incorporated into the fall decor. I found most of them at estate sales.

An old cigarette ad from 1952 - you certainly wouldn't find anything close to this in magazines today. It is a scary ad.

A celluloid Halloween cat.

A couple of old Gurley candles. The small one is a black cat and a moon. The larger one is a two sided black candle with a carved owl and pumpkin on one side...
And a scary witch and cauldron on the other.

Lots more Halloween decor to come...the vintage stuff is my favorite!

Junk Bonanza

This weekend was the Junk Bonanza. It was fantastic.
I'd like to say a huge thank you to Amy at Junkologie. I won tickets to the Junk Bonanza through her giveaway (my first time ever winning a giveaway!!).
I would have gone anyway, but it was nice to have a few extra dollars to spend! Thanks Amy!!!
It was packed - both with vendors and shoppers.

The booths all looked amazing, treasures in every corner!

There were a lot of really unusual and cool storage pieces - most of them already had sold signs on them!

Lots of silver - my favorite!

More silver.

Silver of every kind.

I spotted Layla from the Lettered Cottage. She was being followed around by a camera crew. I hope whatever they were filming makes it to TV - I would love to see a thrifting/junking show.

More from the Queens booth, they had beautiful things - I loved this chair.

Here are a few things I brought home.

A witch, painted onto a carved wood piece. This was from Once Upon a Barn's booth, they had amazing signs and art - much of it was Halloween themed.

This is the other witch. It is a carved wood witch on a broom, with her black cat, now hanging on the front porch.

I picked up a handful of silver flatware.

And an old sorority photograph from 1938 - I love old group photos.

I'm already looking forward to next years Junk Bonanza! It was really an experience to see so many amazing vendors, including some from the blogging world, all together!

Here are a few new vintage finds.
This is a tiny silver monogrammed dish. It may have once been a cover to something, but it is the perfect size and shape for a pin dish.

A silver bell engraved with: American Bell Association 1970 Pittsburgh, PA.

A great old book with really beautiful pictures.

1940's version of Cinderella Retold in Verse. More pretty pictures in this one.

Biscuit tin with scenes from Paris.

And a chalkware box with a devil face on it.
Fits right in with the Halloween decor.

Accidental Pumpkins

Last fall, after Halloween, some pumpkins were tossed into the woods at the edge of our backyard. The animals like to snack on them.
This year, a giant pumpkin patch sprung up.

Some of them are actually big enough to pick!

Spooky Monday

Even though it is only mid September, we like Halloween around here, and have slowly been bringing out the Halloween decor. Like this spooky crow and owl perched around old photos and books.

A stack of old children's books, all witch themed. I pick up the ones with great graphics at estate sales, thrift stores and antique stores.

These are old glass light covers. Most of them have rounded bottoms, so I lined them up in an old sugar cube tray.

The devil and the witch are my favorites.

The haunted house and the pumpkin stand by themselves. They could also be used as bud vases or toothpick holders.

Emma and Thomas

A while back, at an estate sale, I saw a pair of great napkin rings, engraved with the names Emma and Thomas.

They were a bit expensive, and even though I hated to break up the set, I just bought Emma.

I found this great piece at the same sale. It was very tarnished and dirty, almost black - and it had an unreadable monogram.

When I cleaned it up, I realized that the monogram was E & T, Emma and Thomas!

And on the back was '98 - as in 1898. It must have been a wedding gift.

I went back to the sale, and luckily Thomas was still there.

Along with a couple of other pieces I missed.

They all had the E & T, and '98 engravings.

This is the full set - I'm so glad I was able to keep it together!

And by some strange coincidence, this past weekend I found another monogrammed napkin ring with the name Thomas.
And on the flip side is the year 1897!

Labor Day Finds

Even with the Labor Day weekend, I managed to find a few sales. I found this great group photo at an estate sale for $15.
It is from De La Salle Institute 1913, a private school in Minneapolis. Not one smile among the bunch.

I also found this beautiful Victorian spooner - and six silverplate soup spoons.

This is a metal harp book stand - I think it is meant to hold music books.

It is holding a collection of vintage children's Halloween books.

Including these 2 that I found this weekend, love the graphics, and especially love a Halloween book in French!

Found this great little candy tin, made in England. And an art nouveau style lady with a very long neck.

White Wednesday

My pal at October Farm found these great vintage white collars on one of her thrifting excursions. And she sent them to me! She knew I would love them - and I do.
The smaller one has pretty cutout details.
They are in absolutely perfect condition - I don't think they have ever been used.
Details on the back too.
And a pretty pearl closure.

The larger one has a beautiful shape - it will look so pretty over a gray or blue dress.

I used some linen doilies to make this collar and attached it to a shift dress. But I am very excited to have actual collars that can be worn with different outfits.

I had another good weekend haul. This is my favorite find - some old flatware, in it's original box.
It did not look like this when I brought it home, it took well over an hour to polish, but it was worth it.
It has a monogram and a pretty art deco pattern, the box is very art deco as well - gray outside, pink on the inside with a star burst pattern on the fabric.

These are copper photo plates. They are mounted on wood blocks. They are both marching band photos probably from the 50's or 60's.

This crate was $0.50. I bought it because I liked the Halloween sticker.
